Classes at Swabi’s newly built Gajju Khan Medical College will begin next month and will form the first batch of approximately 100 male and female students.

This was announced at the inauguration ceremony of the college held at Bacha Khan Medical Complex (BKMC) on Saturday. The event was attended by GKMC faculty, Health Department staff, teachers of Khyber Medical University, Peshawar, MPs from various political parties and project director Dr. Jehangir Khan.

The college is named after the famous Pakhtun leader Gajju Khan Baba who ruled Pakhtunhwa for 35 years after the death of Malik Ahmad Khan in 1513 AD. The mausoleum is located near the university.

The GKMC project initiated by the previous ANP-led government has been completed at a cost of $4660 million.

Provincial Additional Health Secretary Mutasim Billah said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department will spend $11 billion this fiscal year to develop health facilities in the province.

He said that 164 specialists, 395 doctors and 1,500 health workers will be appointed soon and will perform their duties in the next two weeks.

MNA Usman Tarakai said that the journey started with the establishment of Islamia College is still ongoing. MNA Aqibullah Khan said that all district hospitals will be modernized with the establishment of GKMC.

The head of the university, Dr. Iqbal Begum, said that the main objective of the college is to impart modern medical education to students offering professional skills.

He hopes that BKMC will be equipped with more modern equipment and be converted into a 1000-bed hospital because it has become a teaching hospital. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the NGO “Helping Hand” donated $15 million worth of equipment to BKMC.
